Involuntary Volunteer Work

My wife is involved with a community performance, which is currently in rehearsals for an upcoming performance run. The unfortunate thing about our community is the extreme lack of support from the community. We get many people who audition, but then leave because they did not get the starring role. The arts council president sets this example, and everyone else follows suit.

Because of this lack of support, those that are involved tend to do the work required of 3 more people. Spouses of those involved quickly find themselves being involved. Hence my involuntary volunteer work that I currently find myself in the middle. All weekend was spent stripping old carpet off of old stage platforms to be used for a new production. Only one guy really helping, and a few of the actors helping when they can, which is not much because they should be practicing.

My knuckles are bloodied, my body feels like it has been wrung through the wringer, and I do not remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. My home computer has not been turned on in over a week, which is unfortunate because I have also been volunteered to do the arts council’s website, which is an atrocity. It looks like something a high school student would have churned out. I’m not the greatest web developer, but I know I can do something better than that, and have it be something that even the lazy council president could maintain should I suddenly find myself not forced into volunteer work anymore.

On a side note, we did find some time on Friday to take the kids out for ice-cream. I think it was more for my wife than the kids, but that is the excuse we are using.
